If you enjoy learning about marine life, head to the Newport Aquarium. Located just sixteen minutes away, it is a state-of-the-art facility that was named the number one aquarium in the 2012 Readers’ Choice Travel Awards from 10Best.com and “The Best Rainy Day Outing” in 2006 by Cincinnati Family Magazine. It’s open 365 days a year and some of what you can see and do near The Drexel at Oakley includes:
Gator Alley – This exhibit is home to Snowball and Snowflake, two white American alligators. There are less than 100 known white alligators in the world and they measure approximately six feet in length.
Canyon Falls – As you explore Canyon Falls, you can watch as small-clawed Asian otters play next to an indoor waterfall. An animal experience specialist holds daily talks to explain all about these adorable animals and guests may get to see biologists train and feed them.
Kroger Penguin Palooza – The aquarium has one of the most diverse collections of cold-water penguins in the United States. The light and temperature in the exhibit mimics their natural Antarctic home and the penguins entertain visitors by waddling on land and swimming through the chilly water.
The Gallery – This is one of the most unusual exhibits and it’s a favorite among guests. In the center is an illuminated 360-degree aquarium that’s a habitat of living fossils and also features a lionfish that helps researchers detect pollution.
